# phlog.space is open

phlog.space is a small photolog with one odd rule: whatever you upload comes back worse. The site shrinks each photo to 400 pixels on the long side and runs it through one of 35 effects picked at random. Your picture might come out as a fax, a Game Boy screen, a VHS tape that sat in a hot car, a cyanotype or a frame of Super 8 with dust on the lens. You find out which after you hit post.

The original is never stored. The copy that stays has no EXIF data, so your GPS location and camera model go with it. If you’d rather keep a photo as it is, a switch in settings turns the effects off and the site only shrinks it.

Each member gets a page at phlog.space/~yourname, with a guestbook, an archive by month, an RSS feed and a hit counter that changes its look every time someone loads the page. The about box takes HTML and CSS, so you can repaint your page however you like. Other members can leave a “nice” and a one-line comment on your photos, and that’s about it for the social side. There are no followers and no ads, nothing tracks you, and the whole site runs without a line of JavaScript.

There’s also an 88x31 button with a tiny cracked camera on it, ready for the links page on your own site.

To join, go to phlog.space and click register. Accounts are approved by hand to keep spam out, so give it a little time. You’ll get an email when you’re in. Uploads take JPEG or PNG up to 25 MB, and a caption is optional.

You don’t need an account to look around. Hit random and see what the effects did to someone else’s sunset.
